Unmanned fuel stations finally!
In a landmark move for Nigeria’s energy sector, downstream giant A.A. Rano Nigeria Limited has officially unveiled the country’s first network of fully automated, unmanned fuel stations. This digital transformation, announced in early January 2026, is the result of a strategic partnership with Petrosoft Limited, an indigenous technology firm specializing in oil and gas management systems. The initiative marks a significant shift toward 24-hour self-service fueling, utilizing advanced "SmartPump" technology to allow motorists to refuel and complete transactions via contactless payment platforms without the assistance of on-site pump attendants.
The rollout is scheduled to go live across several of A.A. Rano’s 200 retail outlets throughout the month. Beyond the convenience of round-the-clock access, the company emphasizes that the automation is designed to address long-standing industry challenges, specifically regarding transparency and volume accuracy. By integrating real-time dispenser control, cloud-based inventory monitoring, and automatic vehicle identification for corporate fleets, the system aims to eliminate human error, curb fuel theft, and ensure that consumers receive the exact quantity of fuel for which they have paid.
However, the rapid push toward automation has not been without controversy. The announcement has triggered a wave of protests from the "Concerned Petrol Station Workers" group. Convener Comrade Ibrahim Zango issued a statement on January 8, 2026, warning that the move threatens the livelihoods of thousands of young Nigerians employed as pump attendants. While acknowledging the importance of technological growth, labor advocates are calling on the Federal Government and regulatory agencies to establish policies that balance this innovation with job security and social responsibility.
